There is still a lot of confusion regarding the use of Bus lanes by motorcyclists. Can we? or can we NOT ??? An article on the Mag Ireland website in April 2016 caused even more confusion by claiming that the government had listened to motorcycle lobbying group and allowed motorcyclists to use the bus lanes. However, the well-written and authentic-looking article turns out to be stupid and irresponsible "April Fools" joke. Not funny when many motorcyclists believed it and thought they were fully legitimate using the bus lanes.
A Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Transport raised in the Dáil in December 2018 clearly states that, despite requests from other road users including motorcyclists, only buses, taxis and cyclists are allowed to legally use the bus lanes. A link to the Parliamentary Question and the official reply is below.
SO, THE SIMPLE ANSWER IS "NO" - MOTORCYCLISTS ARE NOT LEGALLY ENTITLED TO USE BUS LANES.
